The Dick Turpin Cottage Restaurant Guide

The Dick Turpin Cottage near Clun in the Shropshire Hills makes a great base for eating and drinking, with such a variety and quantity of pubs and restaurants within easy reach.

We’ve put together this handy guide to give you a “taste” of what’s on offer locally:

The Stagg at Titley

Stagg Inn

This is a great place. Mains are priced at £18 – £25 and there is a special three-course roast lunch menu on Sunday. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

The Waterdine Llanfair Waterdine Near Knighton

Waterdine inn

The closest gourmet restaurant to the cottage.

Food excellent. Sample menu £32.50. Please note that you absolutely need to book in advance here. The atmosphere varies depending on the evening you happen to visit!

The Frog Leintwardine

The Frog

This is the place to go if you are looking for a restaurant specialising in fresh fish. The original owners are now back in charge and this one is definitely worth a look.

It was even reviewed in the Guardian a while back:,3605,1006032,00.html

The Riverside Aymestry

Another good pub/restaurant within reach of the cottage. From their website:

“Authentic and atmospheric, our black & white 16th century timber framed inn is set in the heart of the Herefordshire countryside, surrounded by picturesque natural beauty of the river Lugg valley.”

Sustainability and ethical sourcing are also mentioned, and they even have their own kitchen garden, an important ingredient in the creation of menus:

“Andy and his team prepare the ground, sow and reap the seasonal vegetables and fruits.”

Main courses £15 – £20 on the a la carte menu.

Fishmore Hotel

Located in Fishmore Road, Ludlow, Fishmore Hall is an elegant Georgian house comprised of comfortable bedrooms, a smart, up-market restaurant and bar.

Head Chef Joe Gould and his team aim to source the majority of their ingredients from within a 30-mile radius of the hotel. However, being landlocked in Ludlow, the restaurant’s seafood and fish come from the Isle of Skye and Brixham.

The a la carte menu is priced at £55 for three courses, and the tasting menu is £75 for nine courses, so perhaps this is one for those special occasions.
